The Sultanate of Oman is absolutely wonderful and Muscat is a city with a lot to do and awesome things to try! Muscat is located on the Gulf of Oman with a mix of history, shopping and scenery, so we urge you to read our insider’s advice before your visit. If you are looking for an amazing vacation, then you should check out Muscat, one of the most charming places found 900 years ago on the edge of the desert landscapes holding that beautiful charm.
Here’s a list of things to do as you wander around this gorgeous city.
1. The Grand Mosque
There is an enormous carpet and shoes cannot be worn. It’s on the outskirts and a taxi ride away, but tourists are only allowed in from 9-11am even though if you arrive afterwards you can still walk around the grounds and get some views as it’s reminiscent of the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, on a darker color. If you are interested in some modern Islamic architecture this place is one of the most popular attractions, carefully designed, and it was given by Sultan Qaboos, so when you visit the prayer hall, the rich design and the second largest hand-loomed Iranian carpet are a must see.
2. Top choice market: Mutrah Corniche
Take care not to wander into the historic Shiite district, as the settlement is walled and a sign requests that visitors keep out, just enter through a domed gateway by the traffic lights and keep turning right as you will come back to the sea and head downhill. Bargaining is expected, cards are generally accepted, the main entry is opposite the pedestrian traffic lights, and distinctive items for sale include wedding chests brought down from the Hajar Mountains, an alleyway of sandals and another of aluminium for the traditional marinated lamb in an underground oven. A right fork and a left at Muscat Pharmacy should lead you to an Aladdin’s cave, but who knows where you might end up?
3. If you have no one to come with, in Muscat you can quickly find an escort
What we recommend, besides visiting, is an escort which can also show you the city’s most amazing locations, so make sure you keep this in mind. Not only they know exactly how to act, but you won’t have to worry about getting lost, and you will feel comfortable with her. If you don’t have someone to go with and feel bored, you can hire one as they are quite educated and smart, but you need to check the reviews to know which one suits you, depending on what you want.
4. A majestic architectural masterpiece: the Opera
Coming up this year there will be Giselle, amongst other musical and displays.
5. Old Muscat: a long way away
It is home to some of the biggest attractions, so it is worth a walk around to take a photo of Al Alam Palace and other government buildings as it is easy to walk around.
